Quality Technician

Quality Technician

Job Purpose:

This is a shop-based role. You will spend your day at the machines and the inspection bench — measuring parts, checking first articles, verifying setups, and working alongside machinists to catch problems while the job is still running rather than after it ships. Nopak builds hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders in a high-mix, low-volume environment, so the work changes constantly and the judgment of the person doing it matters.

The ideal candidate understands machining and knows how to measure a part correctly. You can read a print and its tolerances, select the right gage for the feature, take a repeatable measurement, and explain to a machinist why a dimension is out and what is likely causing it. You are comfortable telling someone their part is not right, and equally comfortable helping them fix it.

You will own day-to-day inspection and measurement, the calibration of gages and measuring equipment, and the inspection documentation that makes quality repeatable — work instructions, inspection templates, and first article records. You will support the Engineering Manager on root cause analysis and corrective action when quality escapes occur.

Responsibilities:

Inspection & Measurement

  • Perform in-process, first article, and final inspection on machined, welded, and assembled parts against print requirements.
  • Select and use the correct measuring equipment for each feature — micrometers, calipers, bore and depth gages, height gages, dial indicators, gage blocks, thread and pin gages, and surface plate setups.
  • Take repeatable, defensible measurements and record results accurately; know when a reading is questionable and re-verify rather than pass it along.
  • Verify machine setups and first pieces before a run is released, working directly with the machinist and Shop Supervisor.
  • Inspect incoming material and supplier parts against purchase and print requirements; document and communicate nonconformances.
  • Perform final inspection prior to shipment and confirm the product matches order and print requirements.
  • Identify, tag, and segregate nonconforming material; document the disposition and follow it through to closure.

Machining & Print Fluency

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T, including datums, positional tolerance, runout, and surface finish callouts.
  • Understand CNC milling and turning operations well enough to connect a dimensional problem back to a probable cause — tool wear, fixturing, workholding, thermal growth, program error, or operator technique.
  • Work alongside machinists at the machine, not from an office; make inspection a part of the production conversation rather than a gate at the end of it.
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineering team with dimensional data during machine and process prove-outs.
  • Provide feedback to Engineering on tolerances or callouts that are impractical, unmeasurable, or repeatedly problematic on the floor.

Gage Control & Calibration

  • Maintain the gage and measuring equipment inventory; track location, condition, and calibration status.
  • Perform or coordinate calibration on schedule; maintain calibration records and remove out-of-tolerance equipment from service immediately.
  • Recommend gaging, fixtures, and inspection methods that make critical features faster and more reliable to check.
  • Train machinists and assemblers on correct use of hand gages and basic measurement technique.

Documentation & Standard Work

  • Develop and maintain inspection templates, check sheets, and standardized work instructions for recurring parts and processes.
  • Keep quality documentation current, controlled, and available at the point of use on the floor.
  • Record inspection results and quality data in the ERP system accurately and on time.
  • Prepare quality reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing inspection data; surface trends rather than just individual failures.
  • Support customer documentation requirements, including certifications and inspection records, as requested.

Problem Solving & Corrective Action

  • Support the Engineering Manager on root cause analysis for quality escapes, customer returns, and recurring internal defects.
  • Gather and present the measurement evidence behind a problem — what was out, by how much, on which features, and across how many pieces.
  • Participate in corrective action development and verify that the fix actually held after implementation.
  • Track scrap and rework by cause and bring the patterns forward to Engineering and the Plant Manager.

Continuous Improvement & Safety

  • Contribute to continuous improvement activity on the floor, including work standardization, error-proofing, and inspection method improvement.
  • Support and sustain shop floor organization (5S) in the inspection area and across the plant.
  • Follow all OSHA standards and Nopak safety protocols; work safely in and around operating machinery and overhead cranes.
  • Speak up when something is wrong — on a part, a process, or a safety condition — and follow through until it is addressed.
  • Flex schedule to off shifts or weekend coverage as production demands require.

This role reports to the Director of Finance & Operations and is a key member of the manufacturing leadership team.

This is a floor job. The Plant Manager is expected to spend 90% or more of the day in the shop — at the machines, with the machinists, in front of the schedule board — not behind a desk. You will own the daily execution of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost across machining, welding, assembly, test, and paint.

The ideal candidate came up through a CNC machine shop and never lost the instinct for it. You can read a print, look at a setup and know it is costing you twenty minutes a cycle, question a tooling choice, and tell the difference between a capacity problem and a scheduling problem. You are equally comfortable coaching a first-year machinist and holding a twenty-year veteran to a standard.

You will lead two direct reports: the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, who owns CNC programming, tooling, and fixture design; and the Shop Supervisor, who runs the 26-person direct labor workforce across machining, welding, assembly, and paint. Quality is led by the Engineering Manager, and scheduling and purchasing are led by the Planning Manager, so partnership across those functions is essential.

Floor Leadership & Daily Execution

  • Own daily execution of Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost across all manufacturing operations — machining, welding, assembly, test, and paint.
  • Spend the workday on the production floor driving production; this role is not desk-based.
  • Lead structured SQDC huddles and daily KPI review cadences on the floor; escalate what needs escalating and resolve what does not.
  • Own and manage manufacturing KPIs including labor productivity, on-time delivery, scrap and rework rates, and schedule attainment; take corrective action promptly when targets are missed.

Manufacturing Engineering & CNC Operations

  • Oversee the Manufacturing Engineering Manager and the CNC programming team; hold them accountable for program quality, tooling strategy, fixture design, and setup efficiency.
  • Drive setup reduction initiatives across CNC milling and turning operations, targeting non-value-added time and machine utilization.
  • Evaluate and improve machining practices, tooling applications, and fixturing solutions to increase throughput and reduce cost per part.
  • Ensure CNC programming standards, G-code/M-code practices, and CAD/CAM workflows (Mastercam, SolidWorks, or equivalent) are documented and consistently applied.
  • Own preventive maintenance execution and machine condition; escalate reliability issues before they cost a shipment.
  • Stay current on emerging machining technology and identify opportunities to improve capability, reduce cycle time, and expand Nopak’s manufacturing capacity.

People Leadership & Development

  • Build and sustain a culture of ownership on the shop floor — hire well, set clear standards, give direct feedback, and address performance issues promptly.
  • Develop and execute the machinist training and cross-training program; build the bench Nopak needs to grow.

CNC Machinist – Evening/Night Shift

Hours for this role are (4) 10 hour shifts – Monday to Thursday, 9PM to 7AM.

Responsibilities:

  • Set-up, adjust and operate shop machine tools to perform complex machining operations on a variety of close tolerance work in a high mix short lead time environment
  • Operate CNC machining equipment, and a variety of supporting equipment to perform a series of progressive machining operations to meet precise tolerance and finish requirements.
  • Work from detailed and involved drawings and specifications. Machine types to include CNC Vertical Mills, CNC Horizontal boring bars, CNC lathes, assorted manual machines, special purpose machines, etc.
  • Work can range from smaller less complicated work to large and expensive work or smaller work of complicated nature having critical and exacting requirements as to tolerance and finish.
  • Lay out and self-inspect workmanship.
  • Diagnose and rectify tooling problems and machine malfunctions.
  • Use a wide variety of precision measuring instruments and perform complex inspection of machining specifications and criteria.
  • Knowledge of deburring techniques and ability to operate a variety of deburr and finishing equipment.
  • Active and integral participation in machining improvement Kaizens / Lean efforts

Description of other duties that may be assigned: Perform general shop duties including, but not limited to: material handling, simple deburring, non-skilled machining, and other production related duties as assigned by supervision.

Must adhere to safety standards.

Perform light housekeeping duties (5S) and light preventative maintenance duties as prescribed by management, and all other tasks as required by management.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate).
  • Trade school certificate preferred, or a mix of experience and education.
  • 1 year of CNC machining experience (classroom work will count).
  • Requires knowledge of CNC and conventional machining and machine shop theory.
  • General knowledge of G and M code and able to perform simple set-ups.
  • Requires the ability to use a tablet to follow work schedule and record labor.
  • Requires knowledge of materials, using fixtures, and understanding the use of the appropriate tooling for the job they are running.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to adhere to quality standards, criteria, and drawing specification.
  • Must display a strong “sense of urgency” and can do approach and possess a passion for reducing costs
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees and management.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and/or hear, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, and/or walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or 10-50 pounds while moving product or small packages. Protective Clothing Required: Safety glasses, steel-toe shoes. Gloves are available and recommended.

Working Environment:

Work is performed in a shop environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Material Handler

Job Purpose:

The Material Handler performs various coordination activities to support company operations and maximize company revenue and profitability.

Responsibilities:

Description of Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Provides organization of daily job orders from Production Planning to machine work centers and assembly line to maximize manufacturing output and assure on-time delivery.
  • Coordinates sales orders to the Assembly Line and distributes work load to assembly line
  • Directs material flow and proper staging in the work centers utilizing pick sheets
  • Receives, checks in all incoming parts to stockroom and distributes them physically and in the system
  • Advises Material Manager of inventory discrepancies and location inaccuracies.
  • Prepare and process documents, such as work orders, and route material.
  • Coordinates all outside processing operations
  • Deliver and route material to departments
  • Demonstrate ability to use a variety of basic measuring instruments (scale, tape measure, dial caliper) to verify/validate accurate part identification.
  • Conduct weekly inventory cycle counts
  • Supports Material flow improvements and lean concepts to be implemented.
  • Inventory cycle counts as needed
  • Carries out duties in accordance with company policies and applicable employment laws.

Must adhere to safety standards. During high production peaks may be asked to perform production work. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires education generally equivalent to a high school diploma.
  • Requires 1-3 years of related work experience.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees and management.
  • Requires the ability to use a personal computer and word processing, spreadsheet, and production software.
  • Requires knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a computer, telephone, copy/fax machine.

CNC Programmer / Machinist

The Programmer/Machinist will manage, direct and coordinate all programming activities related to machining to maximize productivity while maintaining quality and meeting customer delivery deadlines. Individual will be results-oriented and priority-driven, with proven ability to execute targeted goals.

Responsibilities:

Description of Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Program all mill machining work centers using MasterCam and manual programming techniques for all CNC equipment
  • Create and maintain all part routings and manufacturing standards within ERP system
  • Teamwork and communication skills
  • Follow the daily and weekly priority that set by production planners and ensure to complete them as planned
  • Be able to setup and run CNC mill machines
  • Setup and change over Mill machines for machinists to optimize the machine utilization daily
  • Utilize solid models to generate programs, work layouts, and setup instructions
  • Develop, manage, and update 3D models of all CNC machine work envelopes, work holding and fixturing
  • Develop and institute standardized rules, strategies, routines, and techniques for all CNC operations: including work holding concepts, tooling approach strategy, roughing/finishing sequence, stock removal rates for roughing/finishing, and machining application routines
  • Manage and maintain standardized electronic work instruction format (setup sheets) across all CNC equipment, with Manufacturing Engineering support
  • Maintain data integrity and accuracy between part routing, CNC program, and work instructions, with Manufacturing Engineering support
  • Institute and maintain electronic tooling database library & identification numbers for all CNC tooling, with Manufacturing Engineering support
  • Evaluate improvement potential within CAM software to optimize efficiency/accuracy and recommend improvements
  • Manage all CNC program libraries for most current/accurate version
  • Manage DNC Predator system for program uploads, verification of accuracy, and overall system update to latest version
  • Manage all CNC controllers to ensure program consistency and that programs are not kept in CNC controls, with Supervisor support
  • Responsible to lead all production activities within defined area.
  • Set up and operate machines (calibration, cleaning etc.) to preform machining operations
  • Read blueprints or job order to determine product specifications and tooling instructions
  • Control and adjust machine settings (e.g. speed)
  • Keep workplace safe, clean, and organized
  • Help with trouble shooting when needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; technical degree is a plus
  • Minimum of 2 years progressive lead experience or equivalent experience in non-lead roles
  • Proven experience as a machine operator
  • Understanding of production procedures
  • Accountable for achieving production goals and benchmarks.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions required in manufacturing setting.
  • Leadership and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Should have a demonstrated ability to function successfully in a fast-paced, changing work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Previous machine shop background desired.
  • Familiar with ISO or other Quality Standards.
